OUTPATIENT PSYCHIATRY

LOCATION: Chestnut Ridge Hospital, Morgantown, West Virginia

MAXIMUM ENROLLMENT: 2 students

STATUS: Elective 

OBJECTIVES: 

1)  Observe patient evaluation and what decision making occurs to choose proper type of
     psychotherapy.
2)  Participate with preceptors in three types of psychotherapy: dynamic, family, and
     cognitive-based therapies.
3)  Meet weekly with Dr. Choby or one of the other preceptors to:
     a.  discuss overall experiences and how they are furthering the student's professional career;
     b.  discuss journal articles pertinent to recent research in outpatient psychotherapy;
     c.  discuss specifics of assigned psychotherapies.
4)  Meet with Brenda Slaughter to participate in the outpatient clinics: thought disorders, anxiety,
     depression, and cognitive disorder clinics.  Brenda will assign patients to the student to be
     followed for the month in outpatient psychotherapy.
5)  Meet weekly with Dr. Desai and/or Dr. Goodykoontz to participate in an ADHD clinic.
6)  Attend assigned grand rounds, clinic lectures, resident seminars, and special event seminars.

METHODS TO ACHIEVE OBJECTIVES: 

1)  Attendance; 2) Participation; 3) Motivation; 4) Involvement; (5) Professionalism; (6) Knowledge of indications and processes for various assigned psychotherapies.

 EXAMINATION PROCEDURES AND EVALUATION CRITERIA: 

Daily observations and preceptor discussions.
